Design & Timeline Process
The James Landscaping design process is a deliberately crafted, carefully guided journey that transforms your outdoor environment into a renewed, functional, and beautiful extension of your home. Every project—whether it involves reinventing an existing space, repurposing underused areas, or completely revitalizing your landscape—begins with intention and thoughtful planning. Our team takes the time to understand your vision, your lifestyle, and the specific needs of your property, ensuring that the final design feels personal and deeply connected to the way you live.
From the moment you schedule your initial appointment to the day of installation completion, you can expect the full process to take approximately six months. This timeline enables detailed design development, material selection, revisions, permitting (if required), and the careful scheduling of our installation crew. Each phase is structured to give every project the attention it deserves, ensuring quality craftsmanship and a result that stands the test of time. Wondering how it all comes together? Below, you’ll find a breakdown of the key steps in the process so you know exactly what to expect at every stage of your landscape transformation.
Our Process: Simple, Transparent, and Efficient
When you work with James Landscaping, you can expect exceptional service, consistent communication, and a quality result.
The design process begins with our simple online questionnaire. This is where you share your ideas, challenges, preferences, and must-haves for your project. Your answers will help our sales representative prepare for the site visit and also help our designers understand any concerns and any design aesthetic you prefer. In less than 10 minutes, you can be on your way to having a new landscape or outdoor living area!
With your completed questionnaire in hand, we’ll call you to discuss your plans, timeline, and budget. If you decide to proceed, we’ll schedule an appointment to meet you at your property for the site visit!
* Note: We require you to provide a survey of your property prior to the site visit
Our sales team will meet with you at your location to walk the property with you and discuss your landscape goals and vision. This part of the process requires you, the homeowner, to be present for about an hour. We will decide together if a full-color, CAD landscape design is needed or if it is possible to make a proposal with a simple sketch, based on the size/scope of the property.
At this point, you would be presented with a design agreement for signature that details the price of the design, the scope, and the design timeline.
If you decide to proceed, half of the design fee would be collected. Our team would then spend the next couple of hours gathering additional property information (taking photos, videos, LIDAR scans, and elevation mapping). We will use the property survey you provided to take detailed notes documenting your existing landscape and design requirements to complete the evaluation accurately.
Over the next several days/weeks, our team of award-winning designers will review the site notes, photos, and videos of your property and create a full color, CAD-generated design of your new landscape!
If necessary, we are also able to design and install any irrigation systems necessary for your project. James Landscaping has several licensed irrigators on staff to consult on, design, install, or repair any irrigation system, in accordance with Texas law. We are registered contractors with the cities in our service area and can assist with your irrigation permitting requirements.
We are also happy to provide any design documents or project plans that your HOA may require.
A few days before the ZOOM presentation, we deliver a folder that includes your design, installation proposal, plant photos, and a lighting catalog. We give you this time to review the design so you will be familiar with it at the presentation. During the ZOOM presentation, our sales representatives will review the design with you and answer any questions you may have. We offer installation phasing so you do not have to install the whole design at one time. Once you are ready to proceed, you sign the proposal and place a down payment to get on the installation schedule. Depending on the time of year, work could begin anywhere between a couple of weeks and six weeks.
Now for the most exciting part! We will transform your landscape from vision to reality design.
We have the best crews in the business – they are artisans and technicians with decades of experience working North Texas landscapes. Our teams will respect your property, leave the site clean at the end of every day, and the installation progress will be evident.
There will be daily communication (voice or text message) notifying you of our arrival times and addressing any questions or concerns that may arise.
When the construction team is finished with the work, your account manager will visit the property to inspect for quality and confirm that you are satisfied with the result.
Your investment deserves to thrive long after installation. With our Horticultural Services (maintenance) contracts, we can customize ongoing management programs to keep your property looking fresh and beautiful.
Our goal is to leave every property better than we found it and build long-term relationships with all our customers.
